About Hearing Care
Hearing Protection & Custom Ear Plugs
Overview

Protection that fits

Off-the-shelf ear plugs work loosely or not at all, because ears are not in a standard shape. We take an impression of your ear and have hearing protection made to it, so it seals properly, sits comfortably and actually gets worn. The same impressions are used for hearing aids, which is why an audiologist takes them. Audiology & Hearing Care

Good to know

  • No referral needed, request an appointment directly
  • Three steps: a short assessment, an ear impression, then fitting
  • Ear impressions take a few minutes and are painless
  • Made to order, so allow time between the impression and collection
  • Ears must be clear of wax before an impression can be taken
  • Employers can request industrial hearing screening for teams

FAQs

Hearing Protection & Custom Ear Plugs questions

How long does it take to get custom ear plugs?
The impression appointment takes around 20 to 25 minutes. Your ear impressions are then sent to the lab, where the custom earplugs are 3D printed and prepared for collection. They are typically ready within 24 to 48 hours.
Do musicians' ear plugs muffle the sound?
No. Filtered musicians' plugs reduce volume fairly evenly across frequencies, so the music sounds the same but quieter, rather than dull.
Can you screen a hearing for our workforce?
Yes. Industrial hearing screening assesses staff working in loud environments, and we fit custom noise protection alongside it.
Will ear wax stop me from getting an impression?
It can. Ears need to be clear before an impression is taken. If there is wax, our ENT team can remove it first.
Do I need a hearing test to get ear protection?
Not usually for swim or noise plugs. If you work in a loud environment, a baseline hearing test is worth having, so any change can be tracked over time.
Do you offer noise cancelling earplugs?
Not in the way headphones do it. Noise cancelling earplugs is a term people search, but active noise cancellation is a headphone technology. Custom ear plugs block sound physically, with a proper seal, which is more effective for sustained loud noise and needs no battery.
Can ear plugs help with tinnitus?
It depends, and the answer is often no. Tinnitus ear plugs are widely searched, but wearing protection in ordinary environments can make tinnitus more noticeable rather than less, because the quieter your surroundings the more you hear it. Protection is worth using in genuinely loud environments to prevent further damage. For tinnitus itself, an assessment and a management plan usually help more than a plug.
